West Brom and Stoke Play Out Tense Goalless Draw at The Hawthorns
West Bromwich Albion’s relegation worries deepened after a frustrating goalless draw with Stoke City at The Hawthorns, extending their winless run to five matches.
The Baggies came into this fixture in desperate need of points, sitting 22nd with just 32 points from 30 games and ten places below their visitors. Their recent form of five consecutive defeats had left them dangerously close to the drop zone, whilst Stoke arrived in respectable mid-table form following a victory in their last outing.
The match statistics told the story of two sides struggling to create clear-cut chances. West Brom edged possession slightly at 51% but managed just two shots on target from nine attempts. Stoke were marginally more threatening with three shots on goal from eight efforts, though both sides registered identical expected goals figures that highlighted the lack of quality in the final third.
Early bookings set a tetchy tone, with Alex Mowatt picking up a yellow card for the hosts after 22 minutes, followed by Ben Wilmot’s caution for Stoke two minutes later. The visitors made the first tactical change at half-time, introducing M. Smit, but neither side could break the deadlock despite a flurry of substitutions in the second period.
West Brom boss Carlos Corberán made a triple substitution on 62 minutes, bringing on Wallace, Dike and Jimoh-Aloba in search of fresh impetus. Stoke responded with changes of their own, but the game remained locked in stalemate as both defences held firm.
The Potters’ slight edge in shots inside the box (seven to four) suggested they carried the greater threat, though neither goalkeeper was seriously tested. West Brom’s superior passing accuracy of 80% compared to Stoke’s 74% reflected their possession advantage but couldn’t translate into meaningful attacking opportunities.
This draw leaves West Brom still in serious trouble, collecting just one point per game on average this season. With the Championship’s unforgiving nature, Corberán’s side must quickly rediscover their scoring touch to avoid what would be a catastrophic relegation to League One.
ScoresFooty’s prediction algorithm had favoured a narrow 1-0 home victory, but the reality proved far more cagey as both teams settled for a point that neither truly needed.
