Match Recap
Atalanta Rout Dortmund to Revive Champions League Campaign
Atalanta 4-1 Borussia Dortmund
UEFA Champions League, Round of 32
Atalanta delivered a commanding performance to thrash Borussia Dortmund 4-1 at the New Balance Arena, providing much-needed momentum in their Champions League campaign after a difficult start to the competition.
The Bergamaschi, sitting 15th in the expanded 36-team table, made their intentions clear from the outset. Gianluca Scamacca opened the scoring after just five minutes, capitalising on Atalanta’s early pressure despite holding only 44% of possession throughout the match.
Raffaele Palladino’s side demonstrated their clinical edge before the interval, with Davide Zappacosta doubling the advantage on the stroke of half-time. The statistics told the story of Atalanta’s efficiency—whilst Dortmund enjoyed territorial dominance, the hosts registered an expected goals tally of 1.70 compared to their opponents’ modest 0.93.
The second half saw Atalanta extend their superiority through Mario Pašalić on 57 minutes, effectively putting the tie beyond doubt. Dortmund, languishing two places below their hosts in 17th position, briefly threatened a comeback when Karim Adeyemi reduced the deficit with quarter of an hour remaining.
However, any hopes of a German revival were extinguished in dramatic fashion during eight minutes of added time. Nico Schlotterbeck received his marching orders for Dortmund, quickly followed by Ramy Bensebaini, who collected a second yellow card. The chaos culminated in a penalty for Atalanta, which Luka Samardžić coolly converted to seal the rout.
The comprehensive victory was built on Atalanta’s superior cutting edge, evidenced by their 13 shots to Dortmund’s seven and significantly better conversion rate. With both sides having struggled in the competition’s new format—Atalanta averaging 1.63 points per game and Dortmund just 1.38—this emphatic result could prove pivotal in their respective quests for knockout stage qualification.
For Dortmund, the discipline shown by their players in the closing stages will be as concerning as the defensive frailties that allowed Atalanta to create 11 shots from inside the penalty area.
